Gabii sa Kabilin~GSK (Heritage Night) is happening on Friday, May 26th. We are happy to inform you that we have prepared a very exciting program for this year’s GSK.

The circle “alidong” (Ceb.) -a simple closed shape with unlimited possibilities is the focus of this year’s GSK celebration at the MoNA. Highlighted this year are the concentric works in the museum collection. Workshops and other activities lined up give the GSK goers a chance to explore the world of circles, dots and rangoli. This year MONA also has a special featured artist- Indian naïve artist Yasha Dabas who will share rangoli and Indian arts with us.

We also have another happy news for GSK goers . This year our sister permaculture-inspired lodging establishments will be officially opening their in-house museums.

The Mayflower Inn (A Heritage and Permaculture Inspired Hotel ) will be opening the Museum of Heritage and Folk Art (MoHFA). It seeks to promote our diverse cultures and shared humanity. The Elicon House (An Ecological Living Conservation House), on the other hand, will be launching the Museum of Bicycling (MoB). It promotes the bio-psycho-social impacts of bicycling.

July 30 Meet & Greet at MoNA

It was a great meet and greet event at the MoNA last Saturday, July 30 in Cebu. Nice to see regular and new museum supporters.

There were 4 main activities:

1st Activity: Watch video summary of the 49th International Meeting of Naïve Artists which Paulina recently attended in Slovenia

2nd Activity: View the Tindahan sa Dalan/Roadside Markets collection which Paulina completed and exhibited in Slovenia; meet & greet with artist

3rd Activity: Draw your own vendor at the Boardroom and then hang your masterpiece at the MoNA Studio Gallery

4th Activity: Visit the MoNA (museum)

Followed of course by some simple yet delicious snacks prepared by West Gorordo Hotel’s Journey’s Cafe.

The Meeting in Trebnje-Day 8-Closing Ceremony and Handing Over of Artworks

Day 8 (June 18) In the morning there was just a short closing program, then handing over of artworks for the permanent collection of Trebnje Gallery of Naïve Artists, followed by a farewell lunch.

The Meeting in Trebnje-Days 3 to 7 -Collaborative Art with Paulina

Days 3 to 7 (June 13 to June 17): The participating artists at the 49th International Meeting of Naïve Artists at Trebnje Gallery interacted with various groups of schoolchildren. Paulina Constancia thought of a little collaborative artwork she could start with the young visitors.

Paulina showed the children the possibilities of trace-cut-glue. So the piece “Show Your True Colors” was born!

Here’s the completed želva/turtle collaborative art made in Trebnje entitled “Show Your True Colors”. (created by Paulina Constancia in collaboration with young visitors at the International Meeting of Naive Artists in Trebnje Gallery, Slovenia- June 11-18, 2016).

Using fabric and acrylic paint, many contributed to this piece. Translations of “Show Your True Colors” in many languages was made possible with the help of the other participating artists at the meeting.

The Meeting in Trebnje-Days 3 to 7 -Artmaking + Studio Visits

Days 3 to 7 (June 13 to June 17): The artists spent their time creating at their studio spaces at Trebnje Gallery. There were also many studio visits from school children. The gallery is actually part of the Center for Culture and Education, and the main purpose of the gallery is to educate the public about naïve art, most especially the young schooling public. In the afternoon of Day 2 (June 12) the participating artists started creating in their assigned mini studio spaces within Trebnje Gallery. Here are some photos of the artists at work:

There was free flowing coffee and lots of fruit and pastry for the artists to enjoy during studio hours. Plus, there was always somebody assigned by the gallery to be present to brew coffee and attend to the needs of the artists. Mornings it was Vesna and afternoons it was Ana. Warm and wonderful hospitality indeed!

The Meeting in Trebnje-Day 1-Opening Ceremony

The 49th International Meeting of Naïve Artists in Trebnje formally started with an opening reception at 6 pm on June 11. In attendance were Patricija Pavlič, Director, Center for Education and Culture in Trebnje and Andrejka Nose, Trebnje Gallery curator. Also present were mayors of the different municipalities in Slovenia helping fund this annual meeting. Also present were friends and supporters of Trebnje Gallery.

Below is the invitation and program of the opening ceremony.

The opening program started with introductions of the 8 participating naïve artists and special guests. Then there was lovely flute and piano music, meet and greet with the artists, light cocktails followed by dinner at the Hotel Opara. Here are a few photos from that very special night.

GSK 2016 at the MoNA, part 11

Last stop for GSK visitors to MoNA was the LINUSAK Making and Free Tasting with Delia of Journeys Cafe. It’s a very simple recipe but requires a lot of muscle power. Some visitors were brave (and strong enough!) to try their hand at preparing this classic Cebuano snack. Others were just happy to watch and taste.

Yum Yum Yum in the Tum, Tum, Tum! Thank you Delia and Journeys Cafe for teaching us how to make LINUSAK. We hope to practice making this at home.

GSK 2016 at the MoNA, part 10

As you can see in the photos, The GSK young visitors to MoNA often followed their gelato stop with a visit to the storytelling room. And there they were quite entertained with a most animated storyteller-educator Cathy Miro-Adalim.
Cathy used a photo storybook created by Paulina Constancia, interpreting the Philippine legend of how the sea became salty.

Ninth stop for GSK visitors at the MoNA was the Tasting station of Eliseo Artisan Gelato with free servings of gelato and flavoured milk.

Joel Lee, the CEO of Eliseo Artisan Gelato/JME Food Products Corp was present to answer questions about his new line of fresh milk products.

8-Free Tasting Gelato & Flavored Milk Local favorites —Tsokolate, Mango, Ube, Macapuno, and Italian classics – Stracciatella Pistachio, Fragola— there was an abundance of delicious gelato flavours to choose from.

Eighth stop for GSK visitors at the MoNA was the ukulele workshop with Regie and Venus Bernaldez of TURTULELE.

“Lightweight, music heavy”, the catchy slogan of the TURTULELE line of ukuleles is also the nature of a music workshop with this very kind and talented husband and wife duo. Lightweight – they make learning music fun, easy and appealing. Music heavy – you are guaranteed to be heavier when you come out of their workshop as you will have added a feather in your cap – yes, you can play the ukulele! And that’s within 20 to 30 minutes of learning with Regie and Venus.

Four strings, big smiles and a big 4 word hurrah – “I can play ukulele!” Check out the joy on the faces of these GSK visitors at the MoNA… A big, big THANK YOU to Regie and Venus for sharing your talents and turtuleles with us!!!

Seventh stop for GSK visitors at the MoNA was Pine Art Print, a pineapple-themed monoprinting workshop.

It was fun seeing how different each print turned out even if they all came from the same linocuts. Everybody had their own favourite colors and design sensibilities. Below are some photos of the workshop with participants proudly signing and posing with their creations.

Sixth stop for GSK visitors at the MoNA was JEEPity Do! a paint-your own-paper jeepney workshop. It was great to learn about the word origin, history and future of jeepneys. Young and old were so focused in creating their own unique jeepney design. JEEPity Do participants got to color and laminate as many paper jeepneys as they wanted. The best part was they got to take them home for GSK show and tell.

Fifth stop for GSK visitors at the MoNA was the photo booth “With Wings, Will Travel”.

Below is the clay bas relief “With Wings, Will Travel” which inspired this photo booth. It was created by Paulina Constancia while on a creative self-exile in Mexico in 1999.

Paulina also wrote a poem with the same title to accompany the piece:

We age through our voyage.
Some forever grounded
with excess baggage.

But those who are bright
travel light.
They fly with courage.
Their wings get stronger.
Eventually,
They fly higher.

Fourth stop for GSK visitors was the Paulina Constancia Museum of Naïve Art (MoNA) where they were able to join in a museum scavenger hunt. Many said that it was a very unique way of exploring and enjoying the museum collection. Winners brought home some pretty cool eco-friendly prizes, like recycled hotel linen shoe bags, recycled tarpaulin pouches, etc.

Third stop for GSK visitors at the MoNA was the studio of international naïve artist Paulina Constancia. Here they had the opportunity to view exhibition and travel mementos, photos, newspaper articles, exhibition posters , paintings in the artist’s personal collection, works in progress. Some even got to meet and greet with the artist who was present during the GSK celebrations at MoNA.

GSK 2016 at the MoNA, part 1

First stop for GSK visitors at the MoNA was the Flying Hearts photo booth. MoNA guests were all smiles as they posed for this heavenly welcome photoshoot.

This wall/permanent photo booth is inspired by Paulina Constancia’s painting “Setting A Heart Free”. With an echoing heart birdie cut-out and a pair of wings, GSK visitors at MoNA were able to immerse themselves in the world of Paulina’s flying hearts.

Below is “Setting A Heart Free” – the painting that inspired the Flying Hearts photo booth. Now in the private collection of Olive Caday-Fillone. Paulina created this mixed media piece in Toronto in 2001 for her show PULSO in Yorkville, Toronto.
