It was a great honor and privilege for Chief Stewarding officer Edna Lee and her staff at West Gorordo Hotel to give a special Green Hotel and Museum Tour to visitors from DTI-Luzon (Department of Trade and Industry) who were in town by the invitation of ProGED (Promotion of Green Economic Development). ProGED is a project of GIZ (German development agency-Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH), an organization that supports projects for international green economic development.

Last Sept 29 and 30, MoNA was happy to welcome a group of 163 students and 8 teachers from Saint Theresa’s College. They were doing a Green Hotel Tour at West Gorordo Hotel. They learned about the different eco features and practices at the hotel as well as how the Museum of Naïve Art is a means to promote sustainability and connectedness in our community.

The family of Japanese cellist Harumi Takaishi came to the MoNA to have a private tour of the museum with artist Paulina Constancia who happened to be in town.
Harumi met Paulina’s nephew Mikko Pablo (also a cellist) at a peace concert for 1000 cellos in Hiroshima. Both Mikko and Harumi met as peace concert performers in Japan. Years later Hiromi’s family visits Mikko’s family in Cebu.

At the entrance of the MoNA: (L-R) Hidehiro, Harumi, Miori (daughter), Kohtaroh (son) and artist Paulina Constancia

Harumi was so happy to find many music-inspired work at the MoNA. She insisted on being photographed in front of this image of a cellist entitled “Hibiscus Melody” since she is a cellist herself. And she was happy to pose with her imaginary cello…

It was a great meet and greet event at the MoNA last Saturday, July 30 in Cebu. Nice to see regular and new museum supporters.
There were 4 main activities:
1st Activity: Watch video summary of the 49th International Meeting of Naïve Artists which Paulina recently attended in Slovenia
2nd Activity: View the Tindahan sa Dalan/Roadside Markets collection which Paulina completed and exhibited in Slovenia; meet & greet with artist
Thank you to all of you who joined us on Saturday. If you want to see Paulina’s new collection “Tindahan sa Dalan/Roadside Markets”, please drop by Mon-Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. For other inquiries please call West Gorordo Hotel at 2314347.

We just want to share with you the exciting news that Paulina Constancia has recently turned over two of her artworks from her collection “Tindahan sa Dalan/”Roadside Markets” (Obcestne stojnice- in Slovenian) to the Galerija likovnih samorastnikov Trebnje or the Trebnje Gallery of Naïve Artists. Formal turn over happened during the Closing Ceremony of the 49th International Meeting of Naïve Artists at the Trebnje Gallery of Naïve Artists in Slovenia on June 18. Paulina was one of the 8 naive artists invited to participate in the said meeting which took place in Trebnje Gallery from June 11 to 18, 2016.

The vendor sells fresh coconuts – a very healthy food, while the vendor’s child is on her 3rd bottle of Coke. This piece shows the nutritional choices parents make for their children. This is always one of the challenges in the Philippines and anywhere in the world. More raw, natural food is essential in our diet. Ironically, as this image shows, even those who have easy access to that still have a curious preference for the unhealthier things in life. – P.Constancia

Artwork #2
CORNtemplations
40 x 50 cm
mixed media art on paper by Paulina Constancia
“Tindahan sa Dalan/”Roadside Markets” collection, 2016
Now in the Permanent Collection of Trebnje Gallery of Naïve Artists, Slovenia
This piece shows that it is imperative that we are vigilant about the truths and lies about our food (its composition and cultivation) and how they affect human, animal and environmental health.
Bee colonies are collapsing around the world. Many experts believe that this is happening due to the large scale use of genetically modified (GM) plants.
Albert Einstein quote: “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.”
This piece highlights the genetically modified maize variant called Bt Corn. As you can see the corn vendor’s name is Mon Santos, his nose is growing because he claims that he sells healthy food. Meantime, the old man at the bench is being enlightened on the matter, and the father and son are spreading the truth about Bt corn and GMOs.
In my hometown, corn growers and vendors tell buyers ‘yes, this is all natural, no pesticides”, you have to wonder if they are being outright deceptive or if they themselves have been deceived… – P.Constancia

Days 3 to 7 (June 13 to June 17): The participating artists at the 49th International Meeting of Naïve Artists at Trebnje Gallery interacted with various groups of schoolchildren. Paulina Constancia thought of a little collaborative artwork she could start with the young visitors.
Paulina showed the children the possibilities of trace-cut-glue. So the piece “Show Your True Colors” was born!
Trace and Cut…
Then glue…
Here’s Paulina unifying the many elements contributed to the piece.

Here’s the completed želva/turtle collaborative art made in Trebnje entitled “Show Your True Colors”. (created by Paulina Constancia in collaboration with young visitors at the International Meeting of Naive Artists in Trebnje Gallery, Slovenia- June 11-18, 2016).
Using fabric and acrylic paint, many contributed to this piece. Translations of “Show Your True Colors” in many languages was made possible with the help of the other participating artists at the meeting.
Days 3 to 7 (June 13 to June 17): The artists spent their time creating at their studio spaces at Trebnje Gallery. There were also many studio visits from school children. The gallery is actually part of the Center for Culture and Education, and the main purpose of the gallery is to educate the public about naïve art, most especially the young schooling public. Below are photos of the young visitors to the gallery during the 49th International Meeting of Naïve Artists:

There was free flowing coffee and lots of fruit and pastry for the artists to enjoy during studio hours. Plus, there was always somebody assigned by the gallery to be present to brew coffee and attend to the needs of the artists. Mornings it was Vesna and afternoons it was Ana. Warm and wonderful hospitality indeed!
Day 2 (June 12) started with a meeting with artists over a morning coffee. Each artist was asked a question specific to his/her own creative practice. Several gallery friends and supporters were also present to listen to the discussion.

Not present at the discussion was Denis Toth (Croatia).

The morning discussion was facilitated by Trebnje Gallery curator Andrejka Nose. Paulina and the other artists at the meeting thought that Andrejka makes a fantastic journalist. She ought to create a you tube channel featuring a series of interviews of naïve artists from Slovenia and across the globe.

In the little Slovenian town of Trebnje ART is alive and is embraced and supported by many kind folks.
During the discussion, images of the works of the participating artists in the 49th International Meeting of Naïve Artists were projected on a screen for all to see.

Last stop for GSK visitors to MoNA was the LINUSAK Making and Free Tasting with Delia of Journeys Cafe. It’s a very simple recipe but requires a lot of muscle power. Some visitors were brave (and strong enough!) to try their hand at preparing this classic Cebuano snack. Others were just happy to watch and taste.

Yum Yum Yum in the Tum, Tum, Tum! Thank you Delia and Journeys Cafe for teaching us how to make LINUSAK. We hope to practice making this at home.
